For the first time since 2012, sales of iPhones alone overtook all of the combined sales of Android handsets. According to market research from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, iPhone sales made up 47.7% of US smartphone sales in the final quarter of 2014. The thing is though, the competition between Apple and Android is now really neck and neck – Android sales made up 47.6% of the market – only a 0.1% difference.
So is this really a big deal? Yes and no. It’s a big deal in the sense that one manufacturer can sell pretty much just as many phones as that of a load of other manufacturers combined, but not much of a big deal in the sense that Android and iOS have been pretty much neck and neck for ages.
Another important number from this report, is that of Windows Phone’s share. Phones running Microsoft’s’ mobile OS only took a measly 9% in that same quarter – making Windows Phone barely a 3rd place in the market. The question is then, will Windows 10 make any difference to that?
