Windows 10 Criticized By Consumer Watchdog
From my experience so far, Windows 10 appears to divide opinion and it’s quite common for users to either love or loathe Microsoft’s latest operating system. Personally, I’ve found it to be quite stable, with a nice user-interface and the advent of DirectX 12 games is a welcome addition. Although, it’s far from perfect and seems to lack a certain level of polish. Recently, the consumer watchdog, Which? heavily criticised Windows 10 and received a large influx of complaints from users decrying of lost files, emails no longing syncing, issues with WiFi, and printing problems. Which? went on to say:
“Once installed, people reported various problems, including printers, wi-fi cards and speakers no longer working with their PC; instances of lost files and email accounts no longer syncing; and, most significantly, their computer encountering such problems that they had to pay someone to repair it,”
“There have also been complaints about poor customer service from Microsoft when users contacted the company about the problems they are having.”
Alex Neill, Which? director of campaigns and policy added:
“We rely heavily on our computers to carry out daily activities, so, when they stop working, it is frustrating and stressful.”
“Many people are having issues with Windows 10, and we believe Microsoft should be doing more to fix the problem.”
Microsoft didn’t agree with the negative remarks and reminded users that they provide technical support online and via phone communication. A spokesperson said:
“The Windows 10 upgrade is a choice designed to help people take advantage of the most secure and most productive Windows,”
“Customers have distinct options. Should a customer need help with the upgrade experience, we have numerous options including free customer support.”
This is a pretty damning verdict from Which? whose sole purpose is to act on behalf of consumers and protect their rights. The body often releases free guides about technology and helps those who feel intimidated. There’s certainly some merit in the complaints and I think Microsoft needs to communicate better to address people’s concerns.
Do you think Windows 10 deserves the criticism often seen in the media?
Thank you to the BBC for providing us with this information.
No it does not.
I have been using Windows 10 from 2 months before release via the insider program, and while i have been on stable release builds i have had little to no issue, i have had 2 BSoD’s in all the months i have been using it and 2 system wide freezes requiring a restart, on Windows 8.1 i had at least 1 BSoD a month and on Windows 7 it was more like 1 a week, Windows 10 is by far my best experience with windows since windows XP, XP was always stable and just worked regardless of the abuse it took, but with modern technology and advancements in gaming, Windows 10 is where its at if you are a gamer anyway, there are things about Windows 10 im am less than thrilled about, but those are things designed to make new or intimidated Windows users more comfortable and makes it easier for them to do things without the need for technical support, but as a power user its easy to get to all those things once you have have figured out the “admin” functions hidden around the Windows UI.
I like the changes made in the Anniversary Update too, the Start Menu UI with all programs being permanently displayed, more akin to the older Start Menu is a welcome change and the gradual improvement of UI is also good. I do not like the Windows store, it is cumbersome and their convoluted delivery system is annoying, but i do not intend to buy products from the windows store just yet, nothing is worth the purchase, but the free games i have are a little annoying to get setup as you do not get an option to where you want to install, the store just uses the defaults system in windows to install to the primary drive, which for me is a 250GB SSD which is nearly full, and if a download has started, you can not simply switch the default install location, you must find and delete all files related to the download (not an easy task as the delivery system is bad) and restart the store UI many times for that change to take.
There are Pro’s and Con’s to using Windows 10 if you are a power user or a new user, but for new users IMHO there has never been an easier Windows OS for them, everything is one or 2 clicks away, most things are clearly and easily identifiable with tooltips and prompts and descriptions, simpler interface with a cleaner look makes navigation easy, the main downside for non “pro” versions of Windows 10 is there are many, many adverts to deal with, in the pro version i have seen zero “adverts” but there was a “suggested apps” thing in the start menu for a brief moment before i disabled it, i only ever saw this one time after using the same installation of windows for 8 months and only after a windows update (which i assume is where it came from as i had never seen the option to remove it before that update) but both my kids laptops which were upgraded from earlier windows version to 10, neither are “pro” versions as they were upgraded from home versions, both had adverts in the start menu and pop up ads in the notification bar until i got a program that disabled all the snooping functions on their computers (something which is much less easy to do on the non pro versions of windows as many of the required functions seem to be very evasive)
Pro’s and Con’s to all OS choices, but in all honesty Windows 10 x64 “pro” is by far the best OS for gamers and probably most new to PC users too.
I am glad it worked for “YOU”. the main point they seem to be making is that it has worked flawlessly for some and has completely ruined systems for others. I personally had huge problems with the 2 machines I have upgraded. Sound did not work, Horrible FPS playing WOW ( Went from 92FPS in Windows 7 to 6FPS in WIndows 10). I updated all drivers and software to windows 10 compatible versions and I still had no luck. so until they get their finger out and stop promising everything will “just” work when you hit upgrade then it’s a no from me
Sorry, but it sounds like your issue was outdated hardware.
I mean no offence but get newer shit.
My PC has components that are no newer than 2 years old, my kids laptop was from 2010, still upgraded, zero issue, 3 machines, all work just fine. Then there are all my friends who have upgraded, i have 267 friends on steam, 50% of them are using Windows 10 ZERO PERCENT of them had issues with upgrades or hardware failure. So thats more than 100 people who i know how have upgraded who had zero issue.
So no, its not just for me, its for most people i know who have upgraded.
Don’t think the problem is outdated Hardware. AMD FX-8350, Gigabyte 970A-DS3P, 8GB Kingston Hyper-X DDR3 1833MHZ RAM, AMD R9 270-X, 120GB Kingston SSD and a WD Black 1TB HDD. I am not willing to upgrade every week because Intel come out with a slightly newer Chipset with a slightly faster clock on the CPU and a slightly updated motherboard
I had qquite a doozy of a problem .My internet stopped working after the 1511 patch. The only fix was to replace the winsock and winsock 2 in the registry with keys from windows 7 .Luckily I had a windows 7 , 64 bit machine aswell as that is the only way of fixing this error .Tried them from a windows 8 machine too ( did’nt work ) If , like a lot of people I only had 1 desktop I would’ve been fucked .System restore had no effect too .
