Something is happening in the world of graphics and it is a sea change that is bringing benefits to everyone in the industry. AMD has always sought to offer the best possible GPU with our Radeon line of products but not since the purchase of ATI in 2006 has the company had the strength it has now.
Take a look at the chart below which shows the performance of AMD Radeon v NVIDIA GeForce as tested using the independent benchmark 3DMark Fire Strike test. We can see that at every point in the stack AMD Radeon offers a competitive performance lead. However when we add currently available pricing from etailers like Newegg.com, Scan.co.uk, Alternate.de or JD.com, you will see that Radeon is also cheaper at every level. Why is this?
There are three factors making Radeon the best buy today;
- 1) Performance. AMDs advanced GPUs deliver extraordinary performance and spectacular efficiency. Offering the best product across the board- better performance at every price point.
- 2) Social. AMD has long had a strong fan base but over the last 18 months our lead in gaming following the wins with Xbox, PS4 and the partnership with EA/Dice with Battlefield 4 and the hugely successful launch of Mantle has seen ‘Team Red’ grow enormously. As measured by Sysomos Heartbeat end user sentiment for AMD has grown by more than 200% in the last 18 months and our expectation is for those to increase further.
- 3) Technological. A recent report from website eTeknix showed how far AMD has come in improving both the performance and reliability of our drivers. Today’s Radeon software drivers are not just good but world class, strong enough to be used by the world’s most demanding and stringent users like Boeing, Lockheed and Philips. Today many stores around the world are now using the chart below to help guide customers to making the right choice of GPU. We believe that the use of fair, independent benchmarks like 3DMark are crucial to the establishment of fair competition to the benefit of all. BTW, R9 270X should have been placed below GTX760. That error in that graph look really annoying for people like me with OCD.

The only reason the benchmark show AMD on top is because 3DMark does not make use of nVidia’s advanced features, like the CUDA cores or PhysX. You can bet your hat that in the real world nVidia is miles ahead in performance, features, and drivers. Yes they are more expensive. I used to own nVidia products all the way back to the Riva days, 2 years ago my GeForce needed a replacement, and I saw AMD cards were a LOT cheaper for apparently similar specs as nVidia’s then-current offering, and decided to give it a try. I bought a Sapphire I think 5870 or something. Oh my god what a waste of my time and money that was. Performance was almost worse than my previous card, and the cooler died within a year, and the card followed suit. I axed the card in rage, went back and bought a GTX 560Ti, and I still have it to this day, and it still runs everything in 1080p maxed out at 60FPS.
The thing to remember here is that you don’t need the top of the line card of the latest generation to run the newest games. That is just an invention of marketing departments, along with confusing model numbers that make no sense. The only real advantage of having a Titan today is if you run multi-monitor setups or super high resolutions (2K or 4K). Any 2 year old decent card can run any game in 1080p today.
Dear God, what sort of idiocy is this? “Advanced features, like the CUDA cores or PhysX”? 3DMark makes no use of them because they’re WORTHLESS at increasing the performance of games! PhysX is a closed-source gimmick that allows more particles on screen (even though all cards already support plenty of particles), not run games faster, and CUDA cores have nothing to do with DirectX, the API used by 3DMark! Unless CUDA cores is a fancy name for shader cores. I’m sorry, I’m not fluent in nvidia’s drivel.
Also, have fun playing Tomb Raider and Crysis 3 in your measly 560 Ti, with your PhysX and CUDA cores.
You should probably educate yourself instead of sounding like a fool. CUDA cores are compute core made available to offload some physics and other processing to the GPU from the CPU. PhysX is a SDK that a lot of game developpers use that uses the CUDA cores to automatically offload the calculations.
If all you want to do is play solitaire, then sure AMD is for you, the rest of us, in the real world, need GPUs that can do more.
For the record, Tomb Raider was running at 60FPS on my 560Ti @1080p, and Crysis well I had to tone it down from max a little. However the VAST majority of the games out there will play just fine with AT LEAST 45FPS in 1080p on this card, with everything maxed (I remove motion blur and DoF because I don’t like how it looks), with SweetFX pumping some additional shaders in there as well.

By the way am I the only one that can make out some of the fine print at the bottom of that graph? Apparently there are two different system configurations for the test, the tests are made at AMD Performance Labs, and AMD “makes no representation that the above information is accurate”. Independant, huh?

Maybe the only game I couldn’t run satisfactorily recently was Watch_Dogs, but then again even people with SLI Titans couldn’t either.
