Intel to provide TRIM support in RAID 0

In its Rapid Storage Technology Alpha Version Release Notes Intel brought good news to the SSDs user staying away from RAID setup due to the lack of TRIM support.

While it is not here now, it is in fact planned in advance as we can read in the 11.5.0.1109 Alpha release notes where Intel announced the TRIM support to be provided in the next release:

2. This release will not enable the TRIM on RAID0 feature, but it will be added in the next RST 11.5 release.  Contact your RST AE representative with questions.”

TRIM is a command that allows an operating system to inform the SSD of which blocks of data are no longer considered in use and can be wiped internally. This command improves the efficiency of the SSD’s internal Garbage Collection (GC) as well as helping reducing degradations in write performances. Up until the next RST this function was not available for SSDs in a RAID setup, which obviously created some issues and/or concern to some.

Hopefully this can put behind us as the SSD users into RAID setup will finally get the TRIM support.
