Scientists Find Quadrillion Tonnes Of Diamonds

In monetary terms, diamonds are one of the most valuable substances on the planet. Well, technically in terms of quantity to cost printer ink also falls into a similar category. Getting back to diamonds though, with them being exceptionally pretty in jewellery and also a fantastic material for cutting their price has always been exceptionally high.

It seems, however, that there is a massive stash of them as yet unmined. In a report via Metro, scientists believe that they have discovered a quadrillion tonnes of diamonds.

How Much Are They Worth?

A quadrillion tonnes is obviously quite a lot. If that is the correct amount though, based on current prices, the hoard would be worth around £150,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. No, that’s not me getting a bit excited with the zero key either. Put simply, if mined, these diamonds could potentially destroy the world’s economy.

If you were off to grab your shovel and pick though, I’m going to have to stop you there. There is a bit of a problem in terms of actually getting them. You see, they have been discovered around 100 miles below the earth’s surface. In terms of what we have achieved so far though, it’s not likely we’ll be able to get them.

Why Can’t We Get Them?

Well, the problem is the depth. At present, the deepest humans have ever dug is around 7.5 miles underground. These diamonds, as above are around 100 miles. We would, therefore, need to beat out best to date, by over 10 times, to actually get them. You’re clearly going to need more than a few JCB’s for that.

If you are the optimistic amongst us though, I wish you every success!

  1. Being as my dogs seam to dig every tiny hole to the size of Pond (I have photos) I may just let them carry on now instead of turning their efforts into aforementioned ponds, ornamental flower beds, sand pits etc etc

  2. Really?!?! They found diamonds underground?!?! If they haven’t reach that depth yet, how do they know they are going to find diamonds there??? Sounds like a bit of a speculation to me!! I might be wrong then.

  3. They’re in the planet for a reason! Stop being money hungry, diamond obsessed, narcissistic, small-minded people- who keep taking from our planet finite resources, that would almost undoubtedly serve a purpose – or why would they be there?!

    Diamonds
    Crystal’s

Leave nature alone, and thriving for your descendants for once and stop being so selfish, greedy, and just plain stupid about the decisions you make.
And start taking reasonable and caring decisions for every species, and all of nature – it created you. And you take, take, take until there’s nothing left.

Don’t cry when the planet starts changing again because of your selfish, unreasonable, unrealistic decisions.

Grow up. I’ve come to realise that you guys at the top of all these decisions and actions, are inconsiderate and greedy, power hungry and down right inhumane.

Try and tell me I’m wrong – everyone with half a brain knows how wrong it is. Ask them, instead of speaking for us. I’m so over it – because I actually have respect for my origins, the things that sustain me – that grow in the dirt, provided by the planet, the resources inside it that keep it working properly etc

Continually taking parts from the Eartg is literally akin to taking organs and vital fluids out of a human body and expecting it to still function properly.
Enlighten me, were us the logic, rationality, and compassion in these kinds of human endeavours?

  4. Diamonds are plentiful on the planet.

It is only because the people who run the markets, artificially inflate the price of them. Ask yourself. If a quadrillion tons of diamonds flooded the market – would they actually be worth the value of what the article says they are?

  5. I’d say leave. them were they are there not eartting anybody. They’re there for a reason what reason is well that’s anybody’s guess so but leave things alone

  6. At that depth we can send our coal to become diamonds. I would suggest to not try to mine because we can make quantum sinthetic diamonds. However I would think with our new nano material that it is achievable. Magnesium nano tubing for example could possibly work. 7. The value in a diamond is because it is rarity , If the market was flooded with diamonds the value would be worthless , Just like pebbles on beach beautiful to look at but no value, So the expense of trying to get them out weighs the profits ,

  8. “Based on current prices…”
Pointless remark; current prices are based on availability and, as some have mentioned, this is controlled artificially by a few, releasing them slowly to the market.
If we were to suddenly bring a quadrillion tonnes to the surface, that control could not be held, and the “current price” would plummet, rendering all diamonds immediately worthless and commonplace.
Probably best leave them there, eh?

  9. Scientists should dig the hole till the depth of hundred miles so that we can get one quadrillion tons diamond, i suggest that we achieve advance technology so that scientists can dig the hole above eight thousand miles deep in this way all the people will travel from one hole to other hole
