Cray’s new XC30 supercomputer sports up to one million Intel Xeon cores

Ah supercomputers, most of us can only dream of gently caressing one of them, and I’m highly envious of anyone who gets to get down and dirty building one, especially Cray. The company have just launched their latest XC30 supercomputer which is capable of 100 petaflops, scaling up to one million cores.

Yes, one million cores!

Cray developed the new supercomputer with DARPA, and the Cascade-codenamed system sports a new type of architecture called Aries interconnect and Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors to slap Titan in the face. Titan being the former supercomputing champion.

High-end research centers have already placed orders so far, with up to $100 million crossing the supercomputing counter. Units are shipping, albeit in limited numbers, and I doubt you can just cram these into the back of your 4WD.
