Introduction
Steambox has been a topic of much debate in the PC gaming community, promising a more gamer-centric PC experience, removing the need for the Windows operating system by providing you with a free alternative, while also bringing PC gaming into the casual mainstream, much like consoles, only a lot better.
It’s been an ambition of mine to buy a Steambox, simply because “why not” and while that’s all good and well, there’s not really a lot of options out there that I’m happy with. A few system integrators have released beta-systems, but what I would like to call a “final product” still seems to be sitting on the horizon. What if we could simply do it ourselves? A Steambox is just a PC with a fancy Linux Distro installed on it anyway…
I’ve picked out a few choice components to build my own Steambox, nothing crazy expensive or overly powerful, but more than enough to provide good 1080p gaming performance. I’m sure many of you love to bash consoles from time to time, so we’ll just round that up with “it’s going to be more powerful than consoles.”

Your issues with SteamOS are because you’re trying to use it like Windows, and that’s not what it’s designed to do, it’s supposed to boot Steam Big Picture mode and that’s it. SteamOS is not a general desktop operating system, expecting it to act that way will of course lead to failure; using it as an every day computer to browse the web, etc. is not what it’s designed to do.
If you’re planning on building a Steam box with SteamOS you should just replace your recommended card with a Nvidia GTX 750Ti/960/970 and it will install and work fine, I have a GTX760 in mine and it’s been running great for over a year.
Right now AMD is not a good option for SteamOS. NVidia and Intel work great tho. AMD/Valve are working on those driver issues and making good strides (the open source AMD driver has gone from about 20% of the features/performance of the windows one to 75% in the last year) but first generation Steam Machines are going to be all intel and nvidia for this reason. The other for SteamOS over Windows is that you get the total-control console experience. Windows update manager, driver installs, etc aren’t popping up asking you to use a keyboard every other week. All that stuff can be managed by the steam app behind the scenes.
Games are starting to run a lot faster in steam OS vs Windows – there is little overhead in a steam OS
Windows has all sorts of non-needed background stuff going on. Drivers are catching up. Old games being ported.
There is little reason to use windows anymore.
But be warned – there are a lot of people and companies that make a shed load of money from it – these people will cling onto their revenue stream and say rubbish.
they need too fix steam os i try it with my build normal one too nothing compaq not a linux user since 95 i am still a kid i kno but not a tiny kid i have the evolution of microsoft and the web since the 90 urlier i remember blizzard when it was sc pn 95-98 play warcraft 2 demo on a mac XD lmao stem os need lot of improve or i am just not a linux guy
