After a reasonably long period of AMD dominance in the Discrete Notebook graphics market Nvidia have finally come out on top. Note the “discrete” market refers to non-integrated solutions, so Intel are not a player here since they only offer Integrated graphics solutions such as the Intel GMA HD graphics. The only two competitors here are AMD (formerly ATi) and Nvidia. Nvidia in quarter two of this year managed to gain a significant 8.9% percent gain in the market taking it into a narrow lead.

Although Nvidia only has a narrow lead analysts expect this to grow as Nvidia’s latest mobile GPUs become established such as the GTX 560M, GTX 570M and GTX 580M. MSI, ASUS and Clevo laptops will all feature a lot of Nvidia GPUs in the coming months so expect Nvidia’s position to strengthen.

You do realize that AMD's latest Mobile, the Radeon HD 6990M has been proven to be a lot faster than the GTX 580M, right? With that in mind, I don't expect Nvidia's market share to rise quite as much. Sure, some loyal fans will stick with Nvidia, but the power-seekers will look up Benchmark comparisons and go with the 6990M. Its like half the price for more power than the 580M.Take a Laptop with a base model of a GTX 480M. An upgrade to Nvidia's GTX 580M will cost the buyer 538$, per-card. Same Laptop, upgrading to a Radeon HD 6990M instead, will cost the buyer 224$, again, per-card. While in some games which favor Nvidia you will note a loss of a few FPS, the overall gain is 10%+.There's really no competition right now.
you would be correct, the HD 6990M is the fastest mobile GPU but what you need to consider here is company agreements. MSI, ASUS, Dell (Alienware) and Clevo have all signed agreements with Nvidia to ship a certain number of laptops based off Nvidia discrete architecture, with all those manufacturers on board AMD doesnt have that much market to be honest. I think AMD mobile GPUs are better are better value for money but quite frankly thats irrelevant.
I see your point, but, since you mentioned Alienware however, IIRC they provide the option for either the 580M or the 6990M. Not sure what Asus is doing with it’s RoG Laptops or its normal Portables, or MSi, but bottle-necking the options would only kill their own profits. Sure, the fans will most likely succumb and buy anyway, but there will be some that seek to buy from elsewhere, like Alienware, or some other smaller site.
