AMD Ryzen CPUs Feature 3600 MHz DDR4 Support

AMD Ryzen

Despite the torrent of leaks out for Ryzen, one of the areas we’ve seen less information on is the DDR4 memory controller. While we do know that official support is at least at 2400 MHz, how much Ryzen can go is unknown. Luckily for us, we now have some more information on the capabilities of the Ryzen memory controller courtesy of Biostar.

According to the Biostar X370 Racing GT7 memory compatibility list, Ryzen will support at least a 4x4GB DDR4 memory kit at 3600 MHz. It’s possible that speeds will go even higher to match what we’ve seen with Intel’s Kaby Lake at 4000 MHz for overclocking. The real key will be once we get the AMP (AMD Memory Profile) numbers which should tell us the maximum supported speed we can expect from all Ryzen CPUs.

With AM4, AMD finally moves away from DDR3 at last and onto DDR4. In the past, AMD’s memory controllers have lagged behind Intel’s offerings, one of many reasons IPC was worse. At last, AMD will have offerings that not only share the same memory speeds but also the same memory type. Hopefully, AMD will have done their work on the new memory controllers and if the leaked benchmarks are anything to go by, they most likely have.
