Microsoft is going to be improving the passkey experience by allowing users to access more accounts through Windows Hello and passkeys built into Windows 11.
Microsoft Built-In Passkey Manager
Remembering all of your passwords is a chore, which is why many of us turn to password managers such as LastPass, Bitwarden or built-into-browser password managers. As shared by BleepingComputer.com, Microsoft will be expanding support for passkeys in Windows 11 which are a more secure and convenient alternative to passwords. Passkeys use unique codes linked to specific devices and allow for biometric authentication and PINs. Having this built into Windows will be an alternative to using dedicated password managers and can be useful with having the link to Windows Hello which uses facial recognition or fingerprints to log in. Passkeys are claimed to be a more secure method than traditional passwords and make stealing your credentials a lot harder.
Insider Preview Build 23486
This new feature was introduced in Insider Build 23486 and brings in a dedicated settings tab under accounts and when BleepingComputer tested, they could use Windows 11 passkeys with Best Buy, google and Microsoft accounts as expected. Remembering passwords is something of the past and I’m all for an easier solution, especially one that claims to be more secure.
