The Ultimate AMD AM5 Motherboard Guide

The next generation of AMD processors, motherboards, chipsets, and even graphics cards, are rolling out in the later part of 2022! While Their AM4 platform has gone from strength to strength in recent years, and their Ryzen CPUs stepped up and showed Intel what AMD was really capable of, it's time for the next generation. Now, it's important to remember that AMD will still have some support for the AM4 platform, as they've often promised to ensure nobody simply gets left behind. However, with the step up to AM5, it allows AMD to take things in new directions, and no doubt, AMD will retain this socket for many years to come too. While I don't mean this article to be "AMD rules Intel sucks" when it comes to sockets, it seems Intel can't boil a kettle without releasing yet another socket, and that means consumers need a new motherboard for each new CPU iteration, so it's great to see AMD keep things fairly consistent. AMD AM5 "The adoption of a new processor, a new motherboard, and other components, can often mean uncertainty on the part of the user. Following half a decade of reliable support for the AM4 platform, AMD has carefully considered when the right time was to make the leap forward to AM5. And the time is now. While support for AM4 will continue, the AM5 platform delivers a wealth of new features and possibilities for users of all types and needs, from gamers to creators and beyond." - AMD What's New? The new AM5 platform will take several forms, With B650, B650E, X670, and X670E motherboards. That's starting at the more affordable end and moving up to the flagship motherboards. While all these chipsets will offer the latest AM5 platform and the new LGA1718 socket. However, while all support PCIe 5.0, there will be varying configurations as you work through the chipsets, obviously more lanes on higher-end models. There will only be DDR5 across the board though, those wanting to stick with DDR4 will have to stay on AM4. Hopefully, this all-in-one guide will walk you through every aspect of the new chipsets, motherboards, and much more! All AM5 Motherboards... So Far! Motherboard Comparison Chart Memory There won't be any DDR4 motherboards for AM5, as AM5 is pressing forward with Dual-Channel DDR5 Memory Support for the platform and that'll no doubt give you the best performance too. The platform will support (up to) DDR5-5600 Native (JEDEC) Speeds EXPO or AMD Extended Profiles for overclocking, if you want to run out of air saying it, is a new feature for AMD's DDR5 support. It will memory OC on the new platform, similar to Intel's XMP and while AM4 got off to a rough start with memory support, it's come a long way, and I expect all those lessons will be put into practice for AM5. I would have liked to see even the B-series boards support DDR4, but I guess sometimes you just have to move on. DDR5 is more expensive, but the prices have been dropping consistently in the last year, and will no doubt fall into line in the not-too-distant future. Benefits of DDR5 Make the most of your memory and reach the next level in gaming with these new technologies.DDR5 requires less voltage, which results in lower power consumption than DDR4.DDR5 allows for up to double the bandwidth of DDR4.DDR5 can have up to four times the capacity in the same space, making sure you never run out of memory again.DDR5 also has improvements to error correction, making sure your experience is consistent and reliable.Memory meets all JEDEC memory standards, so it’s easier than ever to upgrade. DDR5 "Sweet Spot" It's been said that DDR5-6000 will be the sweet spot for the new AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs once optimized with EXPO as this will allow the CPU to fully utilise what's on offer, at the lowest latency in a 1:1 FCLK mode. It's suggested you leave the BIOS FCLK setting at auto, while also performing any memory and memory controller overclocks in 1:1 mode. However, I'm sure for most users, the default profile settings of their memory will be absolutely fine. Of course, I fully expect knowledge of "sweet spots" and overclocking settings to mature in the coming months, as is often the case with a new platform. AMD EXPO The AMD Extended Profiles for Overclocking (AMD EXPO™ Technology) was developed to allow for user-friendly memory overclocking support of all types of memory, giving users an easy path to accelerated power to achieve accelerated memory in their system. AMD Official Memory Partners While I'm sure other memory brands will work with AM5, and many more partners will follow, so far, these are the ones that are fully onboard, confirmed and tested. AMD AM5 There will be three parts of the AM5 platform, starting with the B650, X670 and X670 Extreme. While all of these will be supporting the latest CPUs, they have various I/O configurations that will be reflected in their respective prices. B650 will be the most affordable, X670 on the mid-to-high end and X670 Extreme as the top-end models. That's not to say there may not be some feature-packed B650 that cost more than stripped-down X670, but you get a general idea. However, we do know that the platform will have up to 28 PCIe Gen 5 lanes. Increased Power So, what’s new with AM5? Well, more is more, as the AM5 socket can now deliver native support for up to 170W of power, and while not all CPUs will use all of that, it does give them more to play with for boost clocks, and higher-end models, which is great. Will AM4 CPUs Fit in AM5 Sockets? Furthermore, this socket is a completely new design, which means older AM4 processors will not be compatible. That may be obvious to most of you, but it's still worth pointing out. AM5 will only support the next generation of AMD processors. New Socket, New CPUs, Old Coolers However, despite the socket change, AMD has taken steps to ensure that existing AAM4 cooling solutions will still be broadly compatible with the new processors. That means that while you may need a new motherboard, the same brackets, coolers, fans, AIOs and water cooling blocks you already own should be plug and play. New Socket Design The AM5 platform will transition away from the old PGA (Pin Grid Array) system we saw on previous AM4 compatible hardware. It will now use the brand new LGA 1718 socket. The LGA (Land Grid Array) is actually the same sort of system that Intel uses. This is a big improvement for AMD as you no longer have to worry about pins. There's a lid that holds the CPU down firmly with a single lever arm. If you've ever removed a CPU cooler and found that your AM4 CPU was pulled out of the socket, fear not, that's no longer going to be an issue for AM5! Wi-Fi 6E The wired performance will no doubt be a strong focus for most motherboards using AM5. Certainly, we're seeing more 2.5G ports and fewer 1G LAN ports these days, and even 10G is more standard on the extreme motherboards. However, wireless technology continues to improve greatly each year. With Wi-Fi 6E support on AM5, leveraging the ultra-fast speeds and low latency this technology offers will be important for many of the new motherboards. Gigabit wireless connectivity is going to be a huge advantage for those using VR, game streaming, fibre broadband and many other technologies around the home or in the office and it's going to be commonplace throughout the AM5 motherboard ranges. PCIe 5.0 That's right, it's time to step up to PCIe 5.0 for AMD, which promises to deliver 24 lanes from the CPU socket on AM5. AMD are eager to point out that this is "the most available on any platform in the industry." or to put it a clearer way, more than Intel offers. With PCIe 5.0, you'll be getting faster-than-ever bandwidth, allowing next-generation graphics cards, storage devices and more to deliver even greater performance. AMD claim that storage devices using PCIe 5.0 components could see read speeds increase by 60% or more over PCIe Gen 4.0 devices, which were no slouch to begin with. Faster Storage Currently, PCIe Gen 4 drives can deliver read speeds of up to 7400 Mbps and read speeds of up to 7000 Mbps, give or take. If PCIe Gen 5 can really deliver up to 60% more performance thanks to the increased bandwidth, we could see read speeds of almost 13000 Mbps read and 12000 Mbps write, which is more than 20x the speeds you get from a 2.5" SATA III SSD. The few drives we've seen on the horizon leave the old NVMe 1.4 standard behind for a new version 2.0 controller too. Chipsets Keep in mind, however, that various chipsets will offer different levels of PCIe 5.0 integration. B650 and B650E motherboards will only have PCIe 5.0 storage on the M.2 slot. X670 will have PCIe 5.0 on the NVMe slot also, but the graphics slot is optional, this may even be swapped around, with it just on the GPU slot, and not on the NVMe slot, although I suspect more the former than the latter will be the norm. Then there's the X670 Extreme, which can have PCIe 5.0 on two graphics slots and one NVMe slot. Again though, I suspect some models will offer some tweaks to that configuration too, but gamers will no doubt want to invest in at least X670 for the GPU performance if they're wanting to future-proof for next-gen graphics cards too. USB SuperSpeed and Type-C stronger I/O support is part of the new AMD Socket AM5, which adds up to 14 SuperSpeed USB ports, including Type-C support across the board. Of course, how many ports will vary from one motherboard to another, but the point is, a shift toward more high-speed ports is the main goal for the next generation. AMD X670E Chipset This is the flagship chipset and will be found on all the most feature-packed, and by proxy, the most expensive motherboards for AM5. This comes with PCIe support for both the graphics and the NVMe storage, so it's the most feature-rich and future-proof overall. If you're into extreme systems and overclocking, this is where you'll start. "When only the fastest will do, an AMD X670E motherboard delivers. AMD X670 Chipset This is typically where many high-end PC enthusiasts will want to invest. Designed for high-end gaming and content creation. The X670 will likely be priced a lot friendlier than X670E, but it still offers the PCIe advantages for storage, and while it may lack PCIe graphics slots, there's no huge advantage to that technology at this time. AMD B650E Chipset I've long been a user of the B-series of motherboards from AMD, having built several systems using these more affordable solutions, that more often than not, offer all the high-end features a typical gaming PC requires, without going completely overboard with additional features, and most importantly, cost. "If you are a serious gamer or creator, you will want an AMD B650E motherboard. AMD B650 Chipset This is the most affordable entry into AM5, but don't be fooled into thinking this is "basic" as you still get DDR5 memory, AMD EXPO, PCIe NVMe support and more. However, as we've seen before, it'll likely have more trimmed back aesthetics and heatsinks, and fewer I/O ports to keep the cost down while retaining all the new features. ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E Hero ASUS say this is the "most accessible model in the ROG Crosshair X670E lineup" but make no mistake, it's still an extremely well-equipped motherboard. Dark aesthetics with Polymo lighting effects make it look stunning. With 18+2 teamed power stages rated for 110A and integrated heatsinks, it should be able to get the best out of the latest AM5 processors. ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR X670E GENE The ROG Crosshair X670E Gene is a very interesting motherboard. One, it's microATX, my favourite form factor and one that's quite rare these days. However, it only has ONE PCIe slot, like a microATX motherboard, but it has more M.2 slots... interesting! PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 ensure it's still going to be a performance beast though. Its PCIe 5.0 x16 is ideal for your next-gen GPU. ASUS TUF GAMING X670E-PLUS WIFI The TUF Gaming lineup has long been a favourite of mine, often delivering big performance, with durable and reliable hardware that often comes at a very competitive price. The TUF Gaming X670E-Plus WiFi is certainly a cool-looking motherboard despite being further down the range from the more extreme models. The TUF Gaming X670E-Plus WiFi shares many of the same next-gen features as the higher-end ROG Crosshair and ROG Strix boards. Their new X670E AORUS XTREME is one of the best-equipped motherboards we've ever seen! Gigabyte X670E AORUS MASTER (rev. 1.0) While not as extreme as the XTREME, the AORUS Master is not a motherboard to be taken lightly, this is still one of the most feature-packed, powerful and no doubt expensive boards you'll see in this launch window. Equipped with Twin 16+2+2 Phases Digital VRM power delivery, rated at 105A on the 16 Power Stages, and 90A on the SOC and MISC Phases, this 8+8 parallel power design will allow for some serious overclocking stability. BIOSTAR X670E VALKYRIE Ver 5 BIOSTAR hasn't revealed many motherboards, in fact, this is the first and only one at the time of writing. However, it's a good one, sporting a premium high-end gamer-focused design, and sporting their gaming series Valkyrie branding too. It looks great, maybe not as aesthetically over the top as the big ones from MSI, ASUS, and Gigabyte, but I suspect it won't be as expensive as those either, which is no bad thing.
