Christmas is just around the corner and Intel have made an early move by cutting SSD prices and also introducing a new 120GB model in its X25-M line.
Starting with the lowest capacity model, the 40GB now has a retail price of (£78 inc VAT), 80GB X25-M drive now has an RRP of $199 (£155 inc VAT) and the 160GB drive has been dropped to $415 (£323 inc VAT).
More interesting though, is the new 120GB drive which costs $50 more than the 80GB at $249 (£194 inc VAT) making it the best ‘bang-for-buck’ SSD available at a mere $2.08/£1.61-per-gigabyte.
What Intel is trying to achieve from this price cut, is to attract upgrade seekers in buying an Intel product. Personally, i see this as a nice move from Intel!
Troy Winslow, director of product marketing at Intel NAND Solutions Group said at the intel conference:

With an SSD, tech shoppers can give the gift of a technology makeover that will help speed up, or breathe new life, into a current PC by just swapping out the hard drive for an SSD.

That`s not too bad.Still the prices are too high for solid state disk. In 2 years we should see some improvements in this sector.
Is funny you say that Devit, Andy myself and Mike were all discussing that last night. If you back a few years to when SATA was just getting out there, the relative prices were much the same. Its only once it was becoming more common to the mainstream market that prices slowly started to fall. SSD will have this same problem and given time will drop in price. Its a new tech thing and it happens all the time.
well i cannot say i can afford buying a ssd but when i think about how slow a hdd is compared to a ssd i might give it a try someday.
i cant afford an ssd either but the prices are coming down, intel are one of the fastest i think so when they drop, hopefully others will follow.
