Witcher 3 Map Size

CDProjektRED has already proven it has what it takes to make an epic RPG. The original Witcher game was a little clunky, but it set the wheels in motion for the RPG masterpiece that was The Witcher 2, one of the best games of the last generation and when it launched, it was a titan in terms of graphical performance too. Now we have The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt on the horizon and we’re preparing for the ultimate Witcher experience as well as what is expected to be one of the biggest and best RPGs of all time. The only question is, exactly how big is the world of The Witcher 3?

The Map!

To put it simply, the game is freaking massive. For those that need numbers, 1 “massive” is around 136km2. However, that only accounts for the Novegrad, No Man’s Land and Skellige Islands, there are 4-6 more regions beyond that of unknown size, but we do know that they’re also on a grand scale.

Bigger than Everything Else?

Even with this little bit of information, we can work out that The Witcher 3 is at least 3.7 times the size of the 36 km2 GTA San Andreas map. It’s 1.5 times bigger than the 81 km2 of GTA V, 3.3 times the 41 km2 of Red Dead Redemption. 3 times bigger than Far Cry 4’s 46 km2, three and a half times bigger than Skyrim’s modest 39 km2!

Put simply, we only have conservative estimates of the map size. Of course, with some areas still to be detailed, the estimate is only going to go one way; up!

Thank you GamingBolt for providing us with this information.

  1. If I was 18 again I’d be sh!tting my pants with joy. But I’m a lot older that now, with two kids. I will literally never finish this game.

    1. I don’t have kids, but will still be too busy to finish it also. I’m still buying it though, I love escaping once in a while and as graphice improve so does the immersion :)

    2. I’m still a teen, but I plan on devoting my twenties to me. It helps to do so when you have no friends.

  2. going through that whole map with a horse only or is there something else? Excuse my ignorance I never really paid attention to the previous ones.
At least in GTA you get some fast cars to move around, or some planes and all! haha

  3. I’ve seriously got to get this game. And Metal Gear Solid V, and Ghost Recon Wildlands, and etc. etc.

  4. gta 5 is just 31 sq.miles and witcher 3 is almost 80 sq.miles so gta 5 map will look like a baby in front of witcher 3 map. and while playing gta 5 i traveled from los santos Airport to paleto bay forest in just 5 minutes with the slow car like emperor. so gta 5 map is really small

  5. Anyone remember Midwinter from the late 80’s/early 90’s? That was 160,000 square miles in size! Still one of the biggest open world games to date.
